NHL PLAYOFFS : Blackhawks vs Golden Knights
Blackhawks then it was certainly a “better win” situation. They couldn’t afford to fall into a 3-0 hole against the Vegas Golden Knights, but that’s what happened on Saturday.
Despite outshooting the Golden Knights (27-26) for the first time in the series, the Blackhawks lost 2-1 and now face a win-or-go home situation in Game 4 on Sunday.

"Tough defeat, obviously," head coach Jeremy Colliton said. "Puts us in a desperate situation. I really liked our start. The only thing missing was execution. ... There’s nothing left to do but rest up, regroup and put everything we have into tomorrow’s game and then we’ll see what happens."
The Blackhawks certainly had their chances in Game 3. They had four power-play opportunities, which matched their total from the first two games combined, but failed to capitalize. Alex DeBrincat was easily the best player on the ice for the Blackhawks after registering a game-high nine slot shots on net. No other player had more than four.
Marc-Andre Fleury, who was the surprise starter in the first game of a back-to-back, was sensational and turned aside all but one of the 27 shots he faced for a saved percentage of .963. If he wasn't on his A-game, the Blackhawks probably win the game.
But there are no moral victories in the playoffs. The Blackhawks want results and they're not getting them.
"We’re down three games," Jonathan Toews said. "Tomorrow’s a must-win to stay alive. That’s the reality, that’s the way we look at it. We were working for the bounces, pucks were lying around, just didn’t find the back of the net. Tomorrow we have to believe that we will."
Only four teams in NHL history have overcome a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven Stanley Cup Playoffs series. The all-time record is 4-190 for a success rate 2.1 percent. The last team to do it was the 2014 Los Angeles Kings, who eliminated the San Jose Sharks in the first round and went on to win the Stanley Cup.
The Blackhawks have consistently shown they're a team that will fight back when faced with adversity. And that's what needs to happen on Sunday or their season will be over.
It does not matter who they have in the lineup, and it does not matter who is out of the lineup. It also does not seem to matter who is lining up across from them. The Vegas Golden Knights just keep on winning and remain unbeaten in the NHL’s return to play.
Their 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night gives them a commanding 3-0 series lead in their First Round matchup and puts them in a position to go for a four-game sweep on Sunday when the two teams meet again in Game 4 of the series.
Penalty kill
The Blackhawks have killed off 11 consecutive penalties, including 17 of their last 19 during their last six postseason games after an 1-for-4 performance in Game 1 against Edmonton in the Qualifiers. Chicago’s 89.5 percent penalty kill percentage in that span ranks sixth among the 16 teams in the playoffs.
Playoff Kane and... Maatta
Patrick Kane assisted on Olli Maatta’s goal in Game 3 to give him a team-high eight points (one goal, seven assists) in the postseason. Kane has assisted on Chicago last four goals, including three helpers in Game 2. He’s tied with Jonathan Toews (four goals, four assists) for the most points on the team.
Maatta has scored a career-high three playoff goals and shares the NHL lead among defensemen. His five points top all Blackhawks blueliners.
More scoring production
If the Blackhawks are to force a Game 5 they’ll need more contributions on offense from their forward group. Drake Caggiula (one assist) and Alex Nylander (no points) are two players who could be needed more. Alex DeBrincat (four assists) had his best game of the series in Game 3, with 10 shot attempts (eight on goal), nine slot shots and three scoring chances off the rush in 17:53.
“I thought I had a lot of good chances,” DeBrincat said. “Just didn’t squeak through. Tomorrow’s another day and it’s going to go in tomorrow.”
Posts
The Blackhawks are putting the “post” in postseason with a NHL-high 14 shots to hit the iron. Kane had the most excruciating one in Game 3 with a shot off the post with a wide-open net for his fifth shot off the post in the postseason. If Chicago must hit the post than having them bank off the post and into the net or off another player and in would be the way to go.
Crawford delivers
You know the narrative: the Blackhawks can win if Corey Crawford is Corey Crawford. The goaltender has improved throughout the series and in games, but he has let in some uncharacteristically soft goals in the series. When he’s on, he’s one of the better goalies in the League and the Blackhawks normally feed off it.
